The Ústí nad Labem Region has long faced challenges related to employment and social services, which are essential for improving the living conditions of its inhabitants. High unemployment in some areas and the specific social composition of the population create an increased demand for support services. The Region is responding to these needs by developing a network of social facilities and targeted employment support programmes.
Employment
One of the consequences of the transformation of the economy in the 1990s in the Ústí nad Labem region was the increase in unemployment. Higher unemployment persists in the region’s basin areas and also in the peripheral areas of Šluknov and Podbořany. In a comparison of districts, the highest unemployment is recorded in the Most district.
In the past ten years, unemployment has been reduced, with all municipalities in the region recording a decrease in unemployment. The best situation is in the AD MEC Roudnice nad Labem, Litoměřice and Lovosice, which benefit from the availability of job offers in Prague. Unemployment in the Ústí nad Labem region in recent years has followed trends at the national level. Over the past ten years, unemployment has been cut in half.
The most important sector by number of employees is trade and services. However, a significant share (more than a quarter of the workforce) is still held by the manufacturing industry.
Social services
Social services in the Ústí nad Labem region are mainly provided by various associations (non-profit organisations), contributory organisations of cities and the Ústí nad Labem region, and public corporations. The problematic social composition of the population generates an increased demand for social services. The number of social service facilities per population in the Ústí nad Labem region is higher than the national average and is steadily growing.
Social exclusion is a problem in the Ústí nad Labem region. The extent of social exclusion is monitored through indicators of poverty, exclusion from housing, exclusion from the formal labour market, exclusion from education and indebtedness. These parameters are then combined into an index of social exclusion, which is calculated at the municipal level. For the Ústí nad Labem region, it is a warning that a high number of municipalities have a social exclusion index value higher than 12, which means that they have a very high share of socially excluded inhabitants.
