Public services

The Ústí Region combines a rich cultural heritage with a diverse housing offer, which has developed as a result of centrally controlled construction and the availability of flats in prefabricated houses in larger towns. Attractive tourist destinations such as Bohemian Switzerland and the Ore Mountains support the development of tourism and attract visitors to natural beauty and historical sites, including UNESCO monuments. Current housing development focuses on smaller villages close to cities, while the region systematically promotes tourism and residential development in smaller settlements with good transport links.

Housing

Centrally controlled housing construction in the second half of the 20th century brought a high number of flats in prefabricated houses to the Ústí nad Labem region. Therefore, housing construction is currently mostly concentrated in smaller municipalities that have good transport access to larger towns. Larger towns provide a range of employment opportunities and services, and the villages around them are becoming residential locations. Thus, housing construction is primarily driven by individual house builders.

A comparison of individual AD MEC shows a higher share of flats in apartment buildings (most often prefabricated construction) in the basin cities of Ústí nad Labem, Teplice, Most and Chomutov. The housing construction index (number of completed flats per 1,000 inhabitants) in the Ústí nad Labem region is lower than the average for the Czech Republic. In most of the AD MEC it does not exceed the value of 2, while the average value for the Czech Republic is 3.3 and successful growing regions have values above 3.5.

Culture and tourism

The rich history of the Ústí nad Labem region is reflected in its many monuments, sights and attractions. There are 19 national cultural monuments in the Ústí nad Labem region. Uniquely, two of the local monuments are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. These are the town of Žatec and the mining landscape of the Ore Mountains. The town of Žatec, together with its agricultural surroundings, is unique thanks to its history linked to the cultivation and processing of hops. The Ore Mountains have a history of more than 800 years of mining silver, tin and other metals. The UNESCO list includes 17 sites on the Saxon side of the Ore Mountains and five sites on the Czech side.

In terms of tourism, the Ústí nad Labem region can be divided into four destinations: Bohemian Switzerland, the Bohemian Central Highlands, the Lower Ohře River region and the Ore Mountains. The Ústí nad Labem region seeks to systematically promote tourism through, among other things, destination agencies that focus on developing the tourist offer in these areas.

The Bohemian Switzerland region in particular is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the whole of the Czech Republic, with its abundance of natural beauties combined with a wide range of accompanying services.
